Rules for a walk of whimsy:
1. It cannot be to anywhere, except where the heart desires
2. It cannot be scheduled, and must stop and start as curiosity and joy demand
3. It cannot go faster than an amble. Running is only allowed to race a friend (like a child)
Running is always a little puritanical.
The ideal is flow - singular purpose of mind and body that fades into the background. An internal rhythm.
The ideal of a walk is the silence within [with] which you can hear the rhythms of the world around you.
Today is a weekend for runners in Boston. The Marathon is Monday, and events are crowding Newbury and Boyleston. I watch the scholastic mile, a live band playing All Star and Eye of the Tiger, and so. many. people.
Sadly, few of them seem to be on a walk of whimsy. They are hustling and bustling, going to things and from things. They take pictures of the live band, but do not stop to listen. Few enjoyed the absolutely gorgeous day. Many of those who did were kids, and the parents wise enough to join them.
I kissed a petal - one tiny petal the size of a tooth - and whispered it to the wind. It fell to the ground, dead. But that was okay. Bur just like today, it existed to be beautiful.
